NORTH EAST SERVICES KEY TO FUTURE OF EAST COAST MAIN LINE

12.00.00am GMT Thu 12th Nov 2009

Commenting as the East Coast Main Line comes into public ownership, Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP said:

"Today I challenged the First Minister to ensure the long term future of direct trains from London to Aberdeen and Inverness. These are crucial services.

"People will only use the East Coast Main Line if it is fully integrated with their local branch line. When capacity, reliability and convenience improve across the whole rail network people will be encouraged to leave the car at home and take the train."
