MCINNES: FLAWED SNP REFORMS COULD 'HANDCUFF' NEW POLICE FORCE
Commenting as details of the Scottish Government's intervention with the SPA ahead of the establishment of Scotland's new police force are revealed to the Justice Committee at Holyrood, Scottish Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Alison McInnes said:
'The ongoing power struggle with the Police Authority is deeply concerning, particularly with less than a month before Police Scotland comes into being.
'And it is clear from the correspondence between the Government and the SPA that fundamental issues have still not been resolved.
'Because of the Government's flawed legislation, the door has been left open for the SPA to try and carve out a bigger role for themselves than was ever intended. The SPA's approach risks handcuffing the new police force and raises a huge question mark over how effectively it will be able to operate.
'In their rush to push these ill-thought out plans through Parliament, the SNP have put politics before policing and public safety. This whole reform process has been a mess from start to finish.'
