Commenting on the Audit Scotland report into councillors, which reveals that the number of complaints about breaches of the Code of Conduct shot up by 21% in 2008/09, Liberal Democrat Local Government spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP said:
"Audit Scotland is already warning that looming Scottish Parliament and council elections could lead to heightened tensions within administrations.
"This soaring number of complaints, often made by fellow councillors, is concerning. We need to know how many of the 240 complaints were upheld.
"I understand that malicious complaints can be a problem in some areas. We need to be sure that while genuine breaches of the Code are dealt with, taxpayers' money and council time isn't wasted on groundless, petty complaints."
