Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson and North East MSP Alison McInnes has welcomed National Bike Week and hopes that having a week dedicated to highlighting the health and environmental benefits that cycling can have will encourage more people to get into the saddle.
Commenting she said:
"I am very pleased to support National Bike Week which I hope will encourage more people into the saddle and out on the road.
"Riding a bike can benefit people in lots of great ways. Not only does it promote a healthier lifestyle but also more people riding bikes instead of taking the car could have far reaching benefits for the environment.
"With recent statistics showing that there were 5 cycling deaths on the roads in 2009, the Government must ensure proper infrastructure is in place to keep cyclists as safe as possible when they are out on the roads.
If the Government is to meet its Cycling Target by 2020 it must encourage others who may feel discouraged from cycling because of safety issues.
