Local MSP Alison McInnes joined Liberal Democrat MSP for Central Scotland Hugh O'Donnell, in welcoming the news that Banff Primary School has become the first mainstream school in Scotland to receive accreditation from the National Autistic society. Hugh O'Donnell launched a Members' Bill in January to introduce a national strategy for autism services in Scotland,
Commenting Mr O'Donnell said:
"Banff Primary school and their head teacher Jenny Stone should be congratulated on this great achievement.
"It is a credit to the teachers at Banff primary school who have worked very hard toward this award and they should be congratulated for this.
"It is really encouraging to hear that children with autism at the primary school will have support in place from their teachers to be kept in the mainstream school system where possible.
"I would encourage more schools to follow the example of Banff Primary school so that there can be an end to the postcode lottery which still exists in Scotland in terms of the provision of autism services.
Mrs McInnes added:
"I am delighted that Banff primary school have been recognised for their commitment and dedication to pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disorders and the staff should be seen as a shining example in education."
