Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP has highlighted the real benefits that the new Coalition Agreement will deliver for transport services in Scotland.
The new Coalition's Programme for Government, which was launched yesterday, includes among other things:
• A commitment to establishing a high speed rail network across Britain
• The establishment of fair prices for rail travel
• Putting in place measures to reduce fuel prices for rural areas with pilots taking place in Scotland.
Commenting she said:
"This historic coalition agreement is a bold and ambitious move towards a new kind of politics and will bring many positive changes for transport in Scotland.
"The establishment of a high speed rail network is something that would make travel by Scottish passengers faster and greener, bringing benefits to both our economy and our environment.
"Fairer prices for rail travel are essential in order to encourage more people to use this green mode of transport. Fairer rail prices will have far reaching benefits for our environment as it will encourage more people use the train.
"I am delighted the Chancellor has also agreed to look at ways of helping with fuel costs in remote and rural areas. There are many rural communities in Scotland where soaring fuel costs are doing real harm, and threatening the future of small filling stations.
"While these changes will not take place over night, these are big steps towards a fairer transport system for Scotland and they are hugely welcome.
"Liberal Democrats in coalition are committed to working hard to deliver fairness for the United Kingdom.
