Speaking on the day that Labour MSP Dr Richard Simpson's private members Bill fell, North East Liberal Democrat MSP Alison McInnes said:
"I welcome the news that this private members' bill has failed to gain enough support. Untold damage could have been caused to our shortbread manufacturing businesses if it had been allowed to proceed any further.
"I met recently with Dean's of Huntly to hear of the possible consequences of limiting trans fats in manufactured foods. While perhaps well intentioned this idea was short-sighted, and would have had the effect of limiting the butter content in shortbread.
"The north east is famed for the quality of its shortbread and I would not support anything that threatens the tried and tested recipes that have given firms such as Deans such a foothold in the market."
