Commenting on a disappointing set of annual transport statistics published by the Scottish Government today, Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP said:
"This year, 66 per cent of journeys to work were by car but those travelling as passengers made up only 6 per cent.
"More and more people are driving to work but only a tiny minority are considering car sharing.
"Thousands of people make journeys on the same roads every day. Key arteries around towns and cities are regularly blocked, causing frustration and many lost working hours as commuters are stuck in traffic.
"A well run car sharing scheme with the backing of the Government could take thousands of cars off the road. This would not only save commuters money but also cut Scotland's carbon emissions drastically."
