Alison McInnes and Patrick Harvie MSP accept the Shackleton Medal from Pen Haddow
The Scottish Parliament's Climate Change Committee had every good reason to celebrate last week when they were given a great honour by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society (RSGS).
In the week leading up to the International climate summit in Copenhagen, RSGS award its very first Shackleton medal to the Committee for its role in developing Scotland's world leading climate legislation. The medal has been named after Sir Ernest Shackleton, one of Britain's most famous polar explorers and was presented by Pen Haddow, the renowned North Pole explorer.
Receiving the medal, Alison McInnes, North East Scotland MSP, said:
"It is a real honour for the committee to be awarded this medal from such a respected Society. Our scrutiny of the Bill resulted in many changes, ultimately strengthening the legislation in this important area and it is very heartening to be given recognition in this way. Looking forward, our committee will closely monitor how the government implements the Act."
RSGS Chief Executive, Mike Robinson stated:
"Climate change has to be the most critical geographical issue of our generation and the Scottish Parliament have to be commended for the cross party support for what is the most exemplary climate change legislation anywhere in the world. When the eyes of the world are on Copenhagen this month, we need positive examples more than anything. Thanks to the TICC and Scottish Parliament, we have one. I hope other nations will follow Scotland's example over the next two weeks."
Ends.
