The Government discarded the Glasgow Airport Rail Link (GARL) without proper scrutiny, says the Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson Alison McInnes.
Under questioning from McInnes, Stephen Purcell, leader of Glasgow City Council said that there has been no discussion with Ministers about bringing the cost of GARL down.
Commenting after taking evidence from several key players in the GARL project at the Transport Committee today, McInnes said:
"I am bitterly disappointed. The Government seems to have been very hasty in ditching the GARL and I heard nothing today that makes me change my mind about that.
"The GARL would have created 1,300 jobs and cut down congestion and traffic. It is estimated that it would have delivered £3.14 million per annum in tourism and leisure.
"When the project was handed over to Transport Scotland it was in good health. What has the Transport Minister been doing?
"It takes real focus to deliver major public transport projects in the current economic climate, but we need them to stimulate the economy. Today we have discovered the Government has no leadership and would rather abandon projects like the GARL than be ambitious for Scotland."
