Aberdeenshire MSP Alison McInnes has today won assurances from the Cabinet Secretary for Finance, John Swinney, that he is willing to meet with Aberdeenshire Council to discuss local government funding.
Speaking during question time today in Parliament, Mrs McInnes called for the Cabinet Secretary to hold meetings with the five councils - including Aberdeenshire - whose current funding level is less than 90% of the Scottish average, in order to discuss the introduction of a minimum level of funding from central government. Mr Swinney agreed to the request.
Commenting, Mrs McInnes said: "The gap between the poorest resourced council and the best resourced is far too great under the current system
"I'm very pleased that the Cabinet Secretary has acknowledged the need to hold further meetings with the affected councils to explore the introduction of a 'floor' below which Local Authority per capita funding would not be allowed to fall."
