Commenting ahead of a debate in the Scottish Parliament on the Scottish Road Safety Framework (SRSF), Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP said:
"The most disappointing aspect of this framework is the lack of attention that is placed on the issue of rural roads.
"These roads tragically account for 75% of all accident fatalities in the country.
"Improving our road safety and reducing deaths and serious injuries on our roads has to be a priority for Ministers.
"It is unacceptable that three times as many people die on Scotland's roads than are killed in violent incidents.
"It is simply not enough for Ministers to 'continue to support' current schemes and to 'consider' further action.
"The SNP Government must commit to tackling these shocking figures by introducing specific, targeted measures to improve the safety record of Scotland's rural roads.
"A good first step would be to give greater support to initiatives like the Pass Plus programme. Ministers must realise that safe drivers are made, not born."
