TRAVEL SURVEY SHOWS NEED TO FOCUS ON IMPROVING PUBLIC TRANSPORT - MCINNES

September 9, 2009 12:00 AM

Commenting on the publication of the Scottish Household Survey Travel Diary showing that the majority of all commuter car journeys in Scotland have only one passenger, Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson Alison McInnes said:

"This survey shows that 85 per cent of all commuting journeys have only one person in the car.

"Single occupant car journeys lead to excessive congestion and much greater rates of green house gas emissions. They are also often unnecessary.

"As well as improving our public transport network, it's clear that the SNP Government needs to do more to promote schemes like car sharing right across Scotland.

"These are issues that Ministers must make a priority if Scotland is to reduce its green house gas emissions and meet our ambitious climate change targets.

"The SNP have got the balance wrong. They need to invest more of their transport budget on improving public transport."

Ends.
