Commenting ahead of changes to UK fuel duties set to come into effect at midnight on Monday 31st August, causing fuel prices to rise by around 2p per litre, Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP said:
"Motorists in rural areas often pay as much as 13p or 14p per litre over the national average for fuel. As the new fuel duty comes into effect this cost will only go up.
"The UK Government are letting down drivers in rural areas across the country. But they have been aided and abetted by SNP Ministers in Scotland.
"In April, Liberal Democrats won the backing of the Scottish Parliament in calling for SNP Ministers to work with Westminster and the EU to secure a rural fuel derogation for Scotland.
"So far SNP Ministers have completely failed to make this a reality, showing once again that they prefer rhetoric over real action.
"The SNP must do more to support rural drivers in Scotland, for many of whom having a car is not a luxury but a necessity."
