Commenting on figures revealed by BBC Newsbeat that one in five young drivers aged 17 - 20 in the UK are driving without proper insurance, Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP said:
"These figures are extremely worrying. Driving without insurance is illegal, reckless and there is no excuse for it.
"Insurance companies should, however, do more to encourage those young people who complain about the cost to sign up for car insurance.
"They should be offering reduced rates of insurance to responsible youngsters who agree to further training like Pass Plus. Some companies are already involved in schemes such as this, but more need to sign up and pass discounts on to younger drivers.
"By introducing measures such as these, insurance companies will encourage safer driving and responsible young drivers will gain rewards."
