Liberal Democrat Local Government spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP has urged the Scottish Government to act on the recommendations put forward by Audit Scotland in their report Improving Civil Contingencies and Planning published today (Thursday).
Commenting, Mrs McInnes said:
"It is clear that a lot of good work has been done on how best to prepare Scotland to cope with and recover from a nationwide emergency. But this report flags up key areas for further improvement.
"There is a need for better standards of communication between centralised agencies and local bodies. The report makes it clear that there should also be a standard approach to information sharing across Scotland when it comes to emergency planning.
"With issues such as the spread of swine flu dominating the headlines, people need to have faith that their Government and public bodies are well prepared to cope in the event of a national emergency.
"SNP Ministers must take the recommendations put forward in this report seriously and act on them as a matter of urgency.
"Central government and local councils need to work together to make sure Scotland is prepared to cope and recover if the worst should happen."
