Alison McInnes MSP to launch Carers Week 2009
Alison McInnes, North East Scotland MSP, is supporting this years Carers Week which runs from 8 to 14 June. The official launch of Carers Week will be on Monday 8 June at Trinity Mall in Aberdeen.
Carers Week highlights the work done by those who provide unpaid care for someone who is ill, frail or disabled. This year's theme is "Carers ….The UK's secret service" and calls for carers to receive greater recognition for the incredible contribution they make to their families and communities.
Mrs McInnes said:
"I am honoured to be asked to launch Carers Week 2009 as I believe every carer within Scotland should be applauded for the sterling and untiring work they do.
"They do not have a 9 to 5 job but frequently a 24 hour a day one for very little, if any, financial reward. Current Carers Allowance is a pittance for the very real work they carry out which saves the economy billions every year.
"Let us use this week to give recognition and praise to Scotland's real secret service - our carers."
Carers Week is a partnership of 10 national charities and is supported by many celebrities including David Jason, who was himself a carer to his girlfriend, prior to her death from cancer.
