Aberdeenshire MSP, Alison McInnes is supporting Dementia Awareness Week 2009 which runs from 31 May to 7 June.
Dementia is a progressive loss of powers of the brain resulting in memory loss and the ability to perform everyday tasks.
Mrs McInnes said:
"There have been a number of developments over the years which have helped both people with dementia and their carers.
"It is important that dementia is seen as a condition that affects many and not as an embarrassing illness which needs to be hidden away.
"Alzheimer Scotland has introduced a new, free, 24 hour helpline that can be used by anyone to talk over their concerns and get advice.
"I find it encouraging that several new residential homes built in Scotland are offering enhanced services for older vulnerable people with dementia friendly layouts."
Henry Simmons, Chief Executive of Alzheimer Scotland commented:
"Alzheimer Scotland believes that no one should go through dementia alone. We have introduced a new helpline to provide information and emotional support to those coping with dementia. Call us on 0808 808 3000."
