Commenting on the return of passenger services out of Laurencekirk station for the first time in over forty years, Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson and North East MSP Alison McInnes said:
"As the former Chair of Nestrans, I have been involved in the campaign to return passenger services to Laurencekirk station right from the start. Today's announcement is a welcome first step in improving the rail network in the North East.
"I am glad to see this project, begun under Nicol Stephen in the previous Executive, come to fruition. There is, however, much that still needs to be done in order to make transport connections in the North East fit for purpose.
"We have so far had no commitment from SNP Ministers to the development of Aberdeen Crossrail. There is also still a great deal of uncertainty over funding for the AWPR, which may not see a spade in the ground before 2011.
"If Ministers are serious about improving transport links in the North East then these issues must be resolved as a matter of urgency."
