1 in 100 people in Scotland has coeliac disease, a serious health condition caused when the body is intolerant to gluten, causing the body to attack the immune system. People with celiac disease often have associated conditions such as osteoporosis, diabetes and infertility.
The "Free for Tea" campaign aims to improve gluten-free eating out for people with coeliac disease and is the focus of Coeliac Awareness week which runs from 11 - 17 May 2009.
Commenting, Mrs McInnes, MSP North East Scotland, said:
"At present, eating out is a lottery of people with celiac disease as gluten is present in so many foods, some which caterers would not immediately think of, such as sausages and gravy.
"During the awareness week I encourage everyone to visit the celiac website on: www.coeliac.org.uk and support events being held at National Trust properties throughout the UK.
"Awareness of celiac disease needs to be raised, as currently, it is estimated; only 1 in 8 cases are diagnosed."
