Lib Dem Climate Change spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP today hailed real nappies as a green choice for parents and commended incentive schemes based in the North East.
Speaking during Real Nappy Week, Mrs McInnes said: "Real nappies are a fantastic option for parents keen to limit the environmental impact of the most necessary and mundane tasks. It is largely through these simple decisions that the battle against climate change will be won."
According to the campaign, most children will get through 4000-6000 disposable nappies which end up in landfill.
Mrs McInnes added: "The sheer number of disposables used is concerning. Of course, disposables have their place and are a huge asset when travelling, but it is important that parents know the full environmental cost of relying on them and are aware of the alternatives available to them - for a start, there's no need for safety pins any more!
"Real Nappy Networks in Dundee and Aberdeen have made it easier than ever for parents in the North East to make the switch by incentivising real nappies."
Mrs McInnes signed a parliamentary motion today drawing attention to the campaign.
