Commenting on an official study showing that 1 in 10 motorists is failing to wear a seatbelt and less than a quarter of Scots see driving at 80 mph in a 70mph zone as a serious offence, Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP said:
"These statistics are extremely disappointing. Road safety laws are there to protect, not to inconvenience.
"Seat belt laws have been in place for 25 years, yet these statistics show that Scots are still ignoring this most basic safety precaution. Before recommending any new road safety legislation, the Government's expert group on road safety should remember that existing laws are still being ignored.
"How many more deaths on Scotland's roads will it take to convince passengers and drivers to comply with the rules?"
