Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP has welcomed the launch of a new campaign to improve road safety.
The Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS) will today start targeting van drivers and passengers to tackle the non-wearing or seatbelts and speeding.
Commenting, Mrs McInnes said:
"A targeted campaign to cut down on those in breech of seatbelt and speeding laws is a sound idea I both welcome and support.
"Although it is a minority of light van drivers that perpetuate their reputation for fast and irresponsible driving, Liberal Democrats support ACPOS taking targeted and substantive steps to counter this bad motoring habit that needlessly endangers lives.
"I hope that the campaign encourages motorists of all vehicles to drive safely and use their seatbelts, which we know can reduce dramatically the risk of fatalities in road traffic accidents.
"I'd be delighted if this campaign marks the beginning of the end of the stereotypical "white van man" driving."
