The North East of Scotland has been leading the way in measuring its global footprint. In 2004 Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Councils joined forces with WWF to run the pilot project - one of only 2 in Scotland. Since then they have been collecting data on the region's energy use, transport, buildings, food habits, waste management and water use. The findings were published this month, and they make uncomfortable reading.
The research has revealed that if everyone in the world were to use the earth's resources at the same rate as we are it would take 3 planets to support that lifestyle.
Cllr Alison McInnes who has been involved with the project since the outset said, "A three planet lifestyle is unsustainable - here in the North East we are using up more than our fair share of the world's resources. Urgent action is needed to reduce our impact on the planet, that's why I'm supporting the Liberal Democrats' Green Switch Campaign - it's bold and positive."
Scottish Liberal Democrat Leader Nicol Stephen said, "The evidence just keeps mounting about the causes of climate change. If I become Scotland's First Minister I will be bold on this issue. Scotland can take a leading role in meeting this global challenge, with renewable energy supplying 100% of our electricity by 2050, far greater energy efficiency and micro renewables on every building."
