McInnes Calls for Progress on Grampian Wide Road Safety Partnership

June 22, 2007 12:00 AM

Liberal Democrat Spokesperson on Transport Alison McInnes MSP has called for renewed progress on setting up a 'Grampian Wide Road Safety Partnership' in light of the Grampian Chief Constables report released today showing an increase in road casualty fatalities.

The Chief Constables report shows that despite intelligent led enforcement and a wide range of partnership initiatives to improve driving, road casualty fatalities rose from 53 to 62.

Alison McInnes said "I have written to the Chief Constable of Grampian Police in addition to the Chief Executives of Moray, Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Councils asking how we can progress with the road safety partnership to try and curb the rising deaths on the North East's roads."

"Back in February of this year, Grampian Police hosted a road safety forum to discuss the continuing problems in North East road safety. A number of very good ideas were generated that day. However there was general agreement that there needed to be greater coordination of all the different agencies tasked with road safety. I believe a Grampian wide Road Safety Partnership is the way forward and I would urge that progress is made on this immediately".
