North East MSP Alison McInnes has commended Amnesty International's campaign to close the detention centre at Guantánamo Bay.
Amnesty International has produced a framework for ending illegal detentions in the fight against terrorism and is looking for the support of parliamentarians across the world. It is hoped that the North East MSP will be one of 1000 representatives whose signature will be presented to the US Congress and Presidential Candidates in January.
Writing to Amnesty International Scotland today, McInnes said, "The disgraceful ambivalence Western countries have shown towards civil liberties in general and torture in particular is one of the biggest tragedies to have arisen as a result of the so called War on Terror."
Speaking this evening she added, "A country which to a large extent defined the human rights framework is now treating it with contempt."
